Wisdom teeth are the 3rd Molars that appear at the back of our jaw when we are in our late teens or early twenties. They are the last teeth to emerge.

Wisdom teeth are notorious for causing problems. This is almost always because there is not quite enough room in the mouth to accommodate this last set of teeth. So wisdom teeth tend to come through crooked, not emerge properly, or emerge in a way that pushes other teeth out of alignment.

Wisdom teeth often need to be removed. Failure to promptly remove them often leads to increasing problems. If the wisdom teeth are partly submerged in the gum then they will be prone to infections. Else they will be crooked and cause problems when chewing. At worst the wisdom teeth will cause alignment problems with the jaw an other teeth.

‌‌Extracting wisdom teeth is not pleasant. But the operation is done under anesthetic, with the pain and recovery time only lasting a few days. Once the patient has recovered they will find their mouth suffered fewer problems than before.

Some people do not suffer any issue with wisdom teeth. A few never develop wisdom teeth in the first place. But most people find that they need one of more wisdom teeth removed at some point.

Wisdom teeth problems are usually due to a slightly undersized jaw rather than the teeth themselves. There is speculation that increased use of the jaw when we are younger, chewing on slightly tougher foods, may enlarge our jaw as we grow. This is feasible, but unproven.
